I am perfectly fine with using 3rd grade for our grade level. I could even add some things we could do as an extension for our lesson for quick learners and students who are above grade level and need that extra push. We do this a lot with teaching our standards in Virginia, especially in math class.

\nDo you have a suggestion for a Web2.0 site or online activity. I will look back at some of them today and maybe we can create a list of ones that could potentially work? \nIs it just the two of us working on this project?
\n
\nDid we want to pick a specific concept in reading. If so, what about understanding the different between fiction and nonfiction text features?
\n I know a few sites that have ebooks, which we could incorporate into our lesson. We could even have a smartboard component of creating a Venn Diagram or T-chart that the students can come up and participate with.
\n

\n
\n-Intro\/Rationale: We are into our unit on Nonfiction. Students just learned about the three reasons authors write books (to inform, to persuade, and to entertain). In this lesson, students will learn about nonfiction text features. This reading lesson will focus on students understanding why nonfiction text features help them as learners. These lessons will be completed during the first 15-20 minutes of guided reading during the focus lesson.
\n-Instructions: This will be a 3 day lesson. This bulk of the information will be taught during the reading focus lesson, which lasts 15-20 minutes at the beginning of class. Students will be able to apply what they are learning about nonfiction text features in their small guided reading groups.
\nFocus lessons:
\n1. Day 1:Students will gather whole group for their reading focus lesson.
\n2. The teacher will have a chart on the board: Nonfiction Text Features
\n3. Ask students: What is Nonfiction, Why do we read this genre, and Why does the author write Nonfiction?
\n4. Students will be given a handout chart of nonfiction teacher features on the left side and then on the right side they will have room to use their words to write why this feature helps us as a reader. This is something the students will complete day 2, but they need to be introduced to this handout on day 1.
\n5. By using the Ebook, we will go through the Nonfiction text features and learn about each one: Title, Heading, Photographs, Caption, Bolded Text, Glossary, Index, Table of Contents, Textbox. Students will be able to come up to the interactive white board and circle the text features as we learn about their meaning and purpose for being in the book.
\n6. Review the material learned today in the last 3 minutes of the focus lesson
\n7. Second day: First 2 minutes:Students will share with a partner the text features they learned about the previous day.
\n8. The teacher will help the reader fill in their chart given to them on Day 1. She will have a copy projected onto the smartboard. Students will come up and write how each feature helps them as a reader (we will come up with an answer together as a whole group). They will then be copying down the information onto their own copy at their desk. Students will have to complete an exit ticket in order to go to their desk for independent reading time. This exit ticket will be a 3 question quiz.
\n9. Day 3: This focus lesson will be the last on the text features taught on day 1. This lesson will allow the students to use the information they learned and apply it with a partner(s).
\n10. Each group will get a laptop and follow the directions the teacher has typed out (website and what book to use). The students will be completing an ebook scavenger hunt. They will have a handout of the scavenger hunt directions and what they are looking for. From the Nonfiction ebook their group is viewing, they will have to write down the example of the text feature from the scavenger hunt. Students will have 20 minutes to find all the features.
\n11. Students will exit from the website when they hear the bell ring, and logoff of the computer.
\n12. They will hand in the scavenger hunt activity sheets for a grade.
\n
\nAssessment: There will be both informal and formal assessments for this activity:
\n-Formal: exit ticket 3 question quiz and students completing the nonfiction text feature scavenger hunt from the ebook.
\n-Informal: teacher anecdotal notes of student participation from discussions and activities.
\n
\nClosure:
\nAt the end of class on the 3rd day, students will come together whole group on the carpet. The teacher will ask the following questions that each student will answer on the post-it note the teacher hands out: Why is it important to read nonfiction? What do we learn from nonfiction books? Why do the nonfiction text features (title: predict; subheadings: overview of the text; captions: highlights important information the author wants us to know about the photo; table of contents: helps the reader see what the author included in the book and how it is organized; Glossary: helps the reader understand words the author feels is important or we need background knowledge on; bolded words: the words the author wants us to pay attention to because they are defined in the glossary; index: allows the reader to look for a certain topic and locate that in the book)help us as readers understand what we are reading?

\n
\nLet me know your thoughts! I actually just taught this lesson with my students for the past few days, but I modified a few things after I reflected on what happened! I also added that the students do the scavenger hunt on the laptops (I did the scavenger hunt a different way, but looking back I would have loved to do this on the computers!--if only I thought of this beforehand!)
\nI already have the handouts made that I mentioned in the article. I just need to copy the URL I used from the ebook site from my work laptop. I will copy what I typed out into a word document so we also have it saved onto a computer! I can give you the VA standards that I used....could you maybe find the technology standards that we used in this lesson.
\n
\nI would be able to type up our actual lesson part that we need to submit on Friday, I don't mind at all! We just need to make a lesson plan of the objective\/standards and how they will be assessed and then the activities\/procedures and the assessments to go along with each one.
\n
\nI can send you a draft of everything by Wednesday and then you can change whatever you would like!
\n
\nLet me know!","dateCreated":"1320593651","smartDate":"Nov 6, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"karnol10","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/karnol10","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"45817916","body":"This looks great thanks so much I will def. find the technology standards and the wv CSO's that go along with the lesson.
